Blackboard Scribe

Die-hard SoulPancake fans will know that the task I am referring to in this post is actually Sidewalk Scribe (pg.5). Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, I could not find a clean or dry sidewalk to chalk up.

Weather, shm-eather.

Step 1: Sum up your personal philosophy on life.

Step 2: Acquire chalk.

Step 3: Find pavement a blackboard.

Step 4: Bust out your pseudo-inner-vandal and scrawl your message for the world next class to see.

After my evening class I wandered into an empty classroom with a large empty board and a big piece of chalk (don’t you just hate the little pieces?).

I had spent the previous class period looking up inspirational quotes appropriate for the classroom. This one by Johann Gottfried Von Herder, a German philosopher (and heartthrob), caught my eye.

“Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant, there is a fuel in us which needs to be ignited with sparks.

I’m feeling that Johann.

I am hoping that the sleepy students who walked into that room at 8:00 am saw my work and felt motivated and empowered. Or the teacher promptly erased the message, replacing it with POP QUIZ, which I am sure would have the adverse effect. I guess I’ll never know…

Now, it’s your turn, find a sidewalk or blackboard and scribble away!

No chalk?

Comment with a quote that describes YOUR personal philosophy, and I’ll scribe it somewhere on campus. Looking forward to hearing from you!

Live A Little #45: Draw Something In The Steam On The Mirror After Your Next Shower

First, I attempted to complete task #20: Shower in the dark.

Unfortunately, even with the lights off, their were bright streaks of sunshines coming in through the bathroom window blinds and my shower was quite lovely. Bad planning on my part…

Stay tuned for Shampooing After Dark (I know you are on the edge of your seat).

So to not have my entire shower experience be a SoulPancake bust, I resorted to task #45: Draw something in the steam on the mirror after your next shower.

Sometimes I humor myself by writing things on the bathroom mirror to either scold my roommates (“has anyone seen the werewolf leaving hair in our sink?”) or cheer them up on those horrible hangover mornings (“HELLO! YOU LOOK GORGEOUS TODAY”). This time I tried to shout out to the SP team with a drawing of a stack of pancakes. Fail #2.

This was the best picture I could get of it. Looking on the bright side, my shower was a success in leaving my luscious locks clean, silky, and  smelling of a spring breeze. I guess it’s the little things that count.

Live A Little #10: Stay Up All Night

So, I’m on the plane to my tropical spring break locale of choice, looking through my Live A Little list, and I thought (with pride),  “been there, done that“.

This time last year I was studying abroad in Florence, Italy. This amazing experience had me planning a  spring break itinerary including Barcelona and Amsterdam . No big deal.

And, although I am still enjoying my post-Punta glow I have to admit:
Barcelona > Punta Cana.

(Maybe I’m just partial to sangria, tapas, and beach-side nightclubs but) Ask any student who has visited or studied in Barcelona and they will tell you, it is not real life. It’s vibrant and bright during the day and wild and unpredictable at night.

Although I spent my days in the DR lounging in the sand, or splashing at a student city pool party, there is something about staying in a 6-bunk hostel room with 5 friends and 6 strangers (and no electrical outlets) in Placa Riel that just stole my heart.

Placa Riel

Parc Güell

Placa Riel at night

Chiputos (an ‘early’ evening activity)

Kabul was located just off Las Ramblas (the perfect location) and the staff was young and helpful. Parc Güell was fascinating in the afternoon, and Chiputos was entertaining after dark. With club names like Razzmatazz and Opium how could one not have the week of a lifetime?

So what we did was nap after dinner until about 11PM, get our dancing shoes on by midnight, and the adventure begins technically in the morning. Coming home sometime after 5am, and spending the evening(morning?) on a balcony at Kabul, overlooking the Placa Riel fountain, and watching the sun come up was one of the most memorable evenings of my time abroad.

The best part? By the time I was ready to climb into my bunk, breakfast was being served, and you KNOW I was into that.

Trivial Pursuits

SoulPancake Asks:

List 3 meaningless, trivial things that distract you from your master plan.

1. Fashion Blogs

The ManRepeller, The Blonde Salad, Cashmere and Cupcakes, I CAN’T GET ENOUGH.

On my tight student budget which barely fills my gas tank, never will I ever be able to afford the beautiful pieces these bloggers showcase. Balenciaga bags, layering leather, sheer blouses : It’s like the best window shopping ever. Will I ever actually purchase a bubblegum blazer to go with my leather shortsback bone heels and giant Karen Walker shades? Of course not. But a girl can dream (and procrastinate for hours).

Fellow blogger and friend Bailey created Chasing Anna to fulfill her fashion obsession, check it out =)

2. Caffeine Fixes

When I wake up, all I want is coffee. When I need it very little will get in my way until I have it. In the dead of winter at 6:30am before the sun is even up I will crawl out of my comforter cocoon just to venture downstairs on to the freezing tile tundra of the kitchen to get my fix.

Dramatic? Fine.

It is just dawning on me now that previous boyfriends have come bearing large Starbucks lattes as apologies…

3. Nail Polish

I have a problem with painting and chipping my nails. I can’t stop doing either.

This week alone I have had three different color changes (Obviously I do it myself, if I got manicures that often I’d have no money for my coffee, or to save up for the clothes I’ll lust after but never buy, duh). My picks for spring? Essie’s Haute as Hello, or A French Affair, maybe even Chanel Mimosa, if you’re feeling saucy.

My keyboard and blackberry are both splattered with polish because I’m impatient.  It really is time consuming if you think about it, but I convince myself that as I type they dry faster. Sooooo… if I paint, I must type, and if I must type, I will blog, and if I will blog, then karmawaffles will be made, everyone wins!

Live A Little#13: Feed Yourself For A Week With Only $7

So, this doesn’t really count.

During spring break I stayed at an all-inclusive resort where the food they provided was included in the price, hence, my only option. The refined pallets of my friends and myself have collaborated on a list of a few choice adjectives which could describe the food…

unidentifiable,

disgusting,

inedible,

revolting,

and my favorite, “poopy“.

I would give the resort $7 BACK each DAY if they stopped serving that food. The only safe options seemed to be bread, butter, and fries.

Sidenote: I spent over $7 on the meal I bought at Sbarro the minute I got into the airport. Five days of that resort food and luke-warm Sbarro was a gourmet masterpiece.

As a self-proclaimed Food Network junkie I think that I enjoy food too much to deprive myself for $7 a week. SoulPancake, I’m sorry to have disappointed you.

Whatever, I’m getting cheese fries.

P.S.

This blog is my senior capping project, but unfortunately I can make a trillion karmawaffles, and it wouldn’t help the rising hunger problem. To see how a Marist College peer of mine, Jenna Finn (@MissJRF), is helping Feed America, follow her on Twitter or e-mail her at Jenna.Finn1@marist.edu to contribute to her “The Last Shot” charity photo shoot on campus.

Live A Little #7: Walk Around Barefoot All Day

I survived spring break, just alive enough to report back to you.

Walking around all day without shoes was not as difficult as I had expected. I am all about the sand between your toes, but I wasn’t sure I could sidestep all spilled cocktails and bird doo, not to mention scorching hot pavement.

Alas, I found that after a few piña coladas at breakfast it’s easy to forget the location of your footwear. One pair of flip flops and two very burnt soles later I have the following photos to prove to you that my little piggies ran free in Punta Cana.

(Toes by Essie “Haute as Hello“)

No beach? No problem.

Try this around your house, at least for a few hours. Now that the weather is warming, venture outside and go shoe-less to get the mail, pick up the paper, or take out the garbage.

Just remember the wise words of cultural icon Dane Cook,

f*@k shoes.”

Waffle Maker Gone Wild…

PUNTA CANA ’11 SPRING BREAK. OMG, FML.

TIMES NEVER WASTED WHEN YOU’RE ALWAYS WASTED.

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

True, I intend to imbibe a cocktail (or 5) while on spring break, but the SoulPancake-ing never sleeps!

I have been working on my Live a Little lists (Part I & II) and have found a few that I think I can complete while on spring break. These mind-blowing, heart-pounding, explosively exciting, edge-of-your-seat tasks are listed below…

#7. Walk around barefoot all day

#10. Stay up all night

#13. Feed yourself for a week with only $7 (I’m staying at an all-inclusive resort so I assume that is cheating…)

#22. Climb a tree

#27. Skip, don’t walk

#29. Don’t wear underwear (also cheating, bathing suits are definitely not undergarments)

#34. Pretend to know a stranger

#52. Hold your breath for as long as you can

(If I make it back alive) I will report my experiences to you upon my return. Happy spring break everybody, and don’t forget your breakfast! B-)
